Career on Cathay Pacific
Reflection on my Industrial / Organizational Psychology Paper

In choosing which company to be my final paper, I have no hesitation but immediately pick up Cathay Pacific, partly because I have keen interest in customer-oriented and local business, and partly because the benefit offered by Cathay is very attractive. I learnt from some seniors that customer service will make us become mature, so I have interest to take ground position as my first full time job in life. Yet I find that the job nature is not the same as what I think after knowing more about Cathay.

In the first place, I found that ground position is not just focus on service counter. It includes all procedures start from the point client approaches to the counter until he or she departs from the plane. The variety of different position gives me more choice to choose from. Actually, I am not necessarily applying Customer Services Officer only. Some other positions which I have never thought of in Cathay may also suitable for me. What is more, I found that the job nature of a Customer Services Officer is somewhat routine, which is not what I perceived as challenging and interesting. The job pressure shared by two staff I interviewed also hinders my pursuit in that position.

During the interview, a staff of Cathay reminded me an important point which I think is important for my career development. He asked me what I want to be in the future and why I want to start my career in customer services. I told him I just want to try and enjoy. He told me it is not wise to treat career as a place for play. If you think you will leave your current position soon, you will never do well on that post. And it is a waste of time if I find customer service unsuitable for me few years later. So what I need to do is focus on the field I am interested in, and will not change the field for the whole life. In order words, if I take customer service, I should pay effort on it, take it seriously and will not think I just want to try.

Actually, after writing the paper, I found that customer service is really not my interest. I don¡¦t want to focus my career on this field and more importantly, I discovered that in choosing job, I put emphasis on the career path. I hope that I can achieve higher position in a big company rather than just stay in a small-scale firm. The career path of Customer Services Officer or even other post in ground position is actually not what I want to be.

All in all, this paper gives me a clearer goal in career development.
